Why foam rather than batts on a pole building

Batt insulation between purlins leaves the purlin itself as a thermal bridge, and it leaves gaps at every lap and penetration where air moves. On a pole building with an exposed frame, that is most of the assembly. Foam is applied continuously across panel and purlin together, so the insulation and the air barrier are the same layer.

The ignition barrier is part of the job

Code requires spray foam in an interior application to be protected by a thermal or ignition barrier, and which one depends on the occupancy and whether the space is accessible. We detail and install that as part of the scope. A quote that omits it is not a complete quote.

What it costs to leave it uninsulated

An uninsulated metal shop in the Upper Midwest loses heat through the panel continuously and through air leakage at the eave, ridge and doors on top of that. The heating bill is the visible cost; the less visible one is that the space is uncomfortable enough that it gets used less than it was built for.

On unheated equipment storage the cost shows up differently, as condensation dripping onto machinery through the shoulder seasons — the periods when the panel is cold and the air inside is not.

Sequencing with an existing building in use

Most of this work happens in buildings that are already full. Clearing enough space to spray, protecting what cannot be moved, and staging the work in sections is normal rather than exceptional, and it is worth discussing before the quote rather than after.

Common questions

Can you insulate a pole barn that is already built?
Yes. Interior spray foam is applied to the existing panel and purlin, so the building does not need to be opened up or re-clad.
How much R-value can I get?
It depends on thickness and the space available between purlins, and on what the building is used for. We specify to the target rather than to a default, since a heated shop and an unheated equipment shed have different requirements.
Will foam stop the drips in my machine shed?
If the drips are condensation rather than leaks, yes — that is exactly the mechanism it addresses. Part of the assessment is establishing which one you have, because a genuine leak needs the roof surface addressed as well.
Do I need to insulate the walls too?
Not always. A shed that sweats on the roof but is otherwise unheated may only need the deck. A heated shop generally wants a continuous envelope, because insulating one plane and not the other moves the problem rather than solving it.
