Insulation and condensation control for livestock barns
A livestock building is a humidity problem with a roof on it. Animals, bedding and washdown put moisture into the air continuously, and in an Upper Midwest winter that air meets a cold metal deck and gives it back as condensation.
What fails, and what we do about it

Why ventilation alone does not fix it
Ventilation removes moist air, but it cannot raise the temperature of a bare metal deck above the dew point of the air beneath it. As long as that surface stays cold, it will condense. Insulating the surface itself is what changes the outcome; ventilation then has less to do.
Closed-cell foam does both jobs at once. It is hydrophobic, so it does not absorb the moisture it is managing, and it seals the air leaks that were carrying humidity into the roof cavity in the first place.
Getting the sequence right around stock
Application and cure happen with the building empty. In practice that means coordinating with the operation’s own calendar — between groups, or during a period when animals can be moved — and it is the single biggest scheduling constraint on this work.
We confirm re-entry timing before starting rather than after, because an operator planning around a moving date needs the real number, not an optimistic one.
Corrosion from the inside out
A livestock building’s interior atmosphere is corrosive: moisture plus ammonia works on the underside of a metal deck continuously. Roofs in these buildings frequently fail from below rather than from weather above, and an owner who only inspects from the outside will not see it coming.
Sealing the deck with closed-cell foam removes the condensing surface and the air path together, which addresses the corrosion mechanism rather than just covering the evidence.

Common questions
- Is spray foam safe in a building with animals in it?
- The building is not occupied by animals during application and cure. Once cured, closed-cell foam is inert and is widely used in agricultural buildings. We schedule around moving stock and confirm re-entry timing before we start.
- Will it stand up to washdown?
- Closed-cell foam is hydrophobic and, with the appropriate coating, handles routine washdown. We specify the coating for the actual cleaning regime rather than assuming one.
- How thick does the foam need to be?
- Thickness follows the target R-value and the dew-point calculation for that building’s interior conditions, not a standard number. A heated farrowing barn and an unheated shed get different specifications.
- Can you work around existing ventilation and lighting?
- Yes, and the detailing around penetrations is a large part of the job. Fans, inlets and fixtures are exactly where air and moisture bypass an otherwise good envelope.
